Peer support volunteer opportunities in Edinburgh recovery services

Volunteer Banner

As part of an exciting change in how services are delivered, Lifeline, Turning Point Scotland and Rowan Alba are looking for peer support volunteers who are in recovery and are able to help support people in the recovery hubs and the CARDS service.

Together the organisations are committed to making recovery more visible for those accessing services across the city. Seeing and hearing from people who are further into their recovery journeys can be inspirational. Volunteering as Peer Supporter gives people chances to help others and can also be a good way to deepen your recovery, learn skills and give back.

What do peer support volunteers do?

  • Peer support volunteers will do different things in different services. You won’t be asked to do anything unless you and the organisation are happy that it is right for you.
  • Some of the things that a peer support volunteer might do are:
  • Welcoming people as they come in
  • Running or helping to run groups (SMART, gym groups etc)
  • Escorting people to appointments, meetings or groups
  • Sharing their own experience and keeping people motivated
  • Calling people after they have finished treatment to check in

Who can be a peer support volunteer?

  • You need to have been in abstinent recovery for at least a year.
  • You need to have good support network in place and be confident in your own recovery
  • You need to commit between 2 and 16 hours a week
  • Be enthusiastic, non-judgemental, listening and compassionate

What will you get?

As well as the reward of helping others, you will be offered constant support by workers and given opportunities to grow and develop your skills and experience. You will be given full training.
Services will cover volunteers’ expenses and provide references for future jobs.

There will be an open day on the 29th July, 1-4pm at the Lifeline offices, 62 Broughton Street, Edinburgh EH1 3SA. Feel free to drop in or contact Carmen McShane (0131 554 7516 or to find out more.
